What is Fenugreek?
Fenugreek seeds (Trigonella foenum-graecum) are used not only as food, but have a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine for various indications. Fenugreek has been shown to support healthy breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. In Ayurvedic medicine, fenugreek is traditionally used to soothe irritated tissues, especially mucous surfaces and to aid digestion and maintain a healthy appetite.
In traditional Chinese medicine, fenugreek is used to relieve abdominal discomfort. Fenugreek has a high mucilage content (up to 30% ), which is a gel-like substance known for its ability to soothe irritated mucous membranes, which are tissues that line body cavities or passages exposed to the external environment such as the lining of the digestive tract, mouth and nose. Fenugreek also has antioxidant properties.
Why does my body need Fenugreek?
Nearly all of us experience abdominal discomfort from time to time. Symptoms may be caused by eating too much of a particular food (especially fatty or spicy foods), eating too quickly or triggered by stress, nervousness or too much alcohol. Fenugreek may help to soothe the digestive tract, relieve discomfort and maintain healthy digestion.
Breastfeeding can be a difficult time for some mothers as they feel the pressure to produce enough milk to feed and nourish their newborn child. Fenugreek has been traditionally used in Western herbal Medicine to support breast milk production to assist breastfeeding mothers.
