What is Hops?
You probably recognise hops (Humulus lupulus) as being one of the key ingredients in beer, however it is also a widely used herbal remedy for a number of indications. Hops has a mild calming action and may help to relax the body and reduce the effects of mild worry. The relaxant effect of hops stemmed from the observation of sleepiness in European hops-pickers1 . Hops is also traditionally used in Western herbal medicine as an ‘aromatic bitter’ or herb that aids digestion.
The climbing nature of the Humulus lupulus plant influenced its common name, as it is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hoppan’, which means ‘to climb’2.
Why your body needs Hops?
Nearly all of us have spent a night wide awake and willing for sleep to come where counting sheep just isn’t enough. Due to its relaxant and sleep supporting effects, hops may help to assist in a good night’s sleep. Hops may also help to relieve the effects of mild worry, which may be contributing to sleeping difficulties. Plus, it has the added benefit of aiding the digestive process.
